Contagious Commitment

AS AN AT-LARGE MEMBER and a member of the convention task team, I really had the opportunity to see how the changes to the organization can benefit its members. Early in the year the board and task team leaders gathered in Brown County to revisit the core values (Truth, Courage, Integrity, and Freedom) to make sure all understood the values and grasped the ideas that were behind the changes the board implemented. This is when I fully realized the dedication and commitment of this board to making positive changes to the organization. The other board members and task team leaders were committed to the values and used them as a guiding tool for tough decisions.

The commitment to these ideals is impressive and contagious. I have found myself transferring the IHSPA’s core values into my classroom. That is what this organization is all about: helping advisers become better teachers and helping students become better journalists. When my students share ideas from other publications, we often pulled the core values into the discussion. Reminding students that above all else, truth, courage, integrity and preserving freedom should guide your decision-making.

Another change the board implemented last year was to create task teams. I wanted to get involved with the convention planning, so I joined the convention team. The task teams really give advisers their choice on how involved they want to be with the organization. It gives advisers who are new or not on the board a voice. I am excited that when my time on the board is through that I can continue to contribute as much as I can as a task team member or leader. I hope that all advisers realize that no matter how small, any contribution to a task team helps the organization, keeps new ideas flowing, and helps ensure that we are serving all of our members.
