In honor of Mary Benedict who died April 17, the IHSPA has established a special "tribute page" for those who would like to share a favorite story about this outstanding educator, mentor and friend. Celebrating her 80th birthday in 2002 (right), Mary was a former president of IHSPA and its first Sengenberger winner in 1964.

Connersville, Danville yearbook staffs
lead impressive Hoosier performance
     Indiana publications led the way in Pacemaker and Best of Show competitions at JEA/NSPA's spring convention in San Diego last week. Yearbooks from Connersville and Danville high schools grabbed Pacemakers while five Hoosier staffs distinguished themselves in Best of Show competition. Special story nets 2,400 products;
Schneider focuses on service, people
      For Chelsea Schneider, scholastic journalism has been about touching people's lives. As editor of Warren Central's newspaper, the Owl, Schneider organized a "Domestic Abuse Rememberance Month." Schneider invited newspaper staffs from Lawrence North and Lawrence Central to join her own staff in the service project. The result was more than 2,400 products collected for abuse victims.
     "Their stories deserve to be told," Schneider said. "We can't merely sit in our staff rooms staring at our computer screens," she said. Schneider is Indiana's Student Journalist of the Year. She will study journalism at Franklin College in the fall.

Dvorak wins JEA's Towley Award;
Frazier, IHSPA officers 'retreat'
    
       I.U.'s Jack Dvorak received JEA's coveted "Towley Award"
in Washington D.C. Nov. 22 and gave credit to his
"adult heroes." Click below to see the full text of

     Mike Frazier, far right, revisited the core values
established in 2001 and asked officers to consider
how  to "take the measure of our creation." See the
text of Mike's remarks to the IHSPA officers at
their retreat in Brown County Dec. 5-7.

Death of popular student, athlete
forces school to examine priorities
      Adviser Diana Hadley writes a compelling narrative about the curious reaction of Mooresville High School students to the death of Steve Terrell, a popular student and football player who died in a car accident after he had been drinking at a party.

Morris wins Adviser of Year;

Redesigned Web site provides new features
In an effort to better meet the needs of its audience, the IHSPA has redesigned its Web site. The site is organized around key-word categories located across the top of the nameplate. One major feature is a bulletin board service located under the "Resources" link that facilitates discussion among schools throughout the state. Another link under "Resources" puts visitors in touch with all IHSPA forms saved in PDF format for easy downloading. Also, important news and dates are offered immediately to better serve the viewer. We hope you enjoy the new site and get accustomed to using it often.
