3 Faculty Internships Set in Louisville, Evansville

Three advisers will trade classrooms for newsrooms this summer in IHSPA's 10th annual Internship Program.Since 1991, more than 60 advisers have participated in this unique program which places adviser into their local newsrooms for four weeks in the summer.

"The program has been a phenomenal success over the years. Editors continue to tell me how good these teachers are. They bring a maturity and knowledge of the reader that's unusual for interns," Dennis Cripe, executive director, said.

In June, New Albany advisers Heather Eubank and Camille Goebel (right photo, working with special projects editor Joanna Gnau, again will work for the Louisvile Courier-Journal. Camille returns to the Louisville where she first interned a year ago. Eubank, the yearbook adviser at New Albany, will work with The Leo, an alternative weekly publication in Louisville. "I have a pretty good understanding of photography and visual layouts but I know my weakness is with words on the page. I don't want to wait for age to teach me. I want to learn the skills I need now to teach my students and help me harvest better writers in the future," Eubank said.

Goebel will emphasize copy writing and editing during her internship. She will be a part of a special project team that will produce a publication with a 300,000 circulation in Kentucky. "It was an incredible experience last year," Goebel, who handled much of the design and graphics last summer, said. "This year, I really want to write more. I think I'll be better able to handle my own students' frustrations and hopefully, be able to help them turn their copy into something worth reading."

John Wells, adviser at Mater Dei High School, is familiar with traditional software and design but hopes his internship "gives me the chance to learn new techniques that I could incorporate into my classroom and in my school's yearbook." Wells will work for the Evansville Courier and Press.

Each advisers will earn $350 a week for four weeks. The newspapers and the IHSPA share the cost of the internships.
