BY CHERYL PONTIUS
Judge’s edited issue: Vol. 90 • Issue No. 3

Positive comments:

• You turn Page 1 into a magazine-style format. Plusses and minuses with that. You lose a lot of valuable space for news stories. You gain a distinctive look. As a newspaper judge, I see wasted space. Very few photos are worth full-page treatment.
• Nice teaser box across bottom of page
• Great-looking nameplate
• Inside pages are clean with some breathing room
• Good, active leads
• Nice dominant story/photo per page
• Headlines are active
• Good nameplate – I don’t’ have to struggle to find date of issue
• Good mix of content – lots of student names on your pages
• Excel in feature/news writing
• Editing is generally good
• Nice attempt at center truck

Constructive criticism comments:

• Few headline variances – most are same size and
• weight. No special treatment

• Watch passive voice – read back your sentences and see what to do to make them active voice
• No staff editorial – you need one per issue. Find a topic around school that requires some investigation and then cover it in an editorial. Make your opinion page a true student forum.
• Photo quality could be improved
