Hoosier Stars 2002
By Terri Lynn Johnson

Hoosier Stars finalists sparkle with action photos, bright colors, well-written copy, exciting quotes and well-designed pages, making the choice for top books in each division difficult. Quality books created a great glimpse into student life and made the judge's work delightful but demanding.

The Division I key to Hoosier Star-dom for Shawe Memorial Senior High School in Madison was "Turning the Key," the Connoisseur's theme. Bright colors and consistent art supporting the theme define the year of unlocking friendships, making key decisions, keeping students keyed up, locking up organizations and turning the key on the success for the peek through the keyhole into life at Shawe. A great deal of information is packaged well in this small book. The actual key on the cover adds an outstanding and exciting element.

Merit winners in Division I include the Hanover Central High School Key with its "Recount" theme, placing the book in time, and the Northwood High School Logue as its "Tri-a-new-Angle" presenting a new slant on the school year.

"Now Serving" up success, The Hoop Pole from Mount Vernon High School created an interesting book, punctuated with exciting dominant photos and an inviting blend of color, type and graphics to win the Division II Hoosier Star. Outstanding photography joined informative captions to make this a book that recreates the year vividly.

Merit winners in Division II included the Griffith High School Reflector with its creative mixture of type to support its "All Mixed Up" theme and the Connersville High School Cohiscan with its excellent candid photography explaining that "Some Restrictions May Apply."

Paragon 2001 lived up to its name for Munster High School, becoming the Division III Hoosier Star with its entertaining look at "Studentsby day, by night and by choice." The book sparkles with well-written copy. Its pages are sprinkled with good quotes. Photos capture great facial expressions and exciting action.

Merit winners in Division III included the Lawrence North Lynx with its unique use of type to support the school name in "settLed iN" and the Floyd Central High School Bartizan with a well-developed theme, great photography and well-written copy as the Bartizan staff "Play to Win."
