Nelson accepts Dow's Teacher of the
Year;
Indiana leads way in 2001 contests
Munsonian editor Caleb Beasley, left,
presents his adviser, Terry Nelson, with flowers following her
stirring address to advisers an the annual Advisers' Luncheon
last week in Boston. Nelson received her award from Dow Jones
as the 2001 recipient of the National High School Journalism
Teacher of the Year.

IHSPA adopts 'core values,' direction
for better quality of service, support
Marilyn Bedford, community
relations director of The Julien Center in Indianapolis, (right)
outlines the agenda Dec. 8 during a daylong retreat in Brown
County State Park. Bedford facilitated the meeting of IHSPA officers
and guests to help determine the organization's identity and
purpose. The concepts of "freedom," "integrity,"
"courage" and "truth" emerged as the foundation
for any future changes and goals. Click

While a new
IHSPA committee headed by Diana Hadley works on new academic
standards for journalism, Pam Essex found ways to conform Avon's
journalism content to existing English/Language Arts state standards.

IHSPA advisers review new J- texts;
Hadley finds best 'text' in the day's news
Last summer,
the journalism textbook adoption committee approved four journalism
texts. In the coming weeks, the IHSPA will offer reviews of the
four textbooks selected along with other other materials that
work well in today's classroom. Click

experience to keep her journalism students interested. Future
reviews will cover "Journalism Today" (Ferguson); "Introduction
to Journalism" (Reque); "Journalism Matters" (Shaffer)
and "Scholastic Journalism" (Rolnicki).

Caleb Beasley
wins 'journalist of year' honors for 2002
Caleb Beasley,
a senior at Muncie Central High School, was named Indiana's Student
Journalist of the Year this week. Beasley will compete with other
state winners in JEA's national search for its student journalist
of the year.
