 Nearly 40 students from 21 high schools worked together to create 10 maestro packages and a new 48-page Sampler during the Editor's Leadership Workshop June 9-12.

Nelson accepts Dow's Teacher of the Year;
Indiana leads way in 2001 contests

IHSPA adopts 'core values,' direction
for better quality of service, support

Marilyn Bedford, community relations director of The Julien Center in Indianapolis, (right) outlines the agenda Dec. 8 during a daylong retreat in Brown County State Park. Bedford facilitated the meeting of IHSPA officers and guests to help determine the organization's identity and purpose. The concepts of "freedom," "integrity," "courage" and "truth" emerged as the foundation for any future changes and goals. aligns with English standards
While a new IHSPA committee headed by Diana Hadley works on new academic standards for journalism, Pam Essex found ways to conform Avon's journalism content to existing English/Language Arts state standards. IHSPA advisers review new J- texts;
Hadley finds best 'text' in the day's news
Last summer, the journalism textbook adoption committee approved four journalism texts. In the coming weeks, the IHSPA will offer reviews of the four textbooks selected along with other other materials that work well in today's classroom. Future reviews will cover "Journalism Today" (Ferguson); "Introduction to Journalism" (Reque); "Journalism Matters" (Shaffer) and "Scholastic Journalism" (Rolnicki).

Muncie Central's Caleb Beasley
wins 'journalist of year' honors for 2002
Caleb Beasley, a senior at Muncie Central High School, was named Indiana's Student Journalist of the Year this week. Beasley will compete with other state winners in JEA's national search for its student journalist of the year.

Yearbook Stars set for 2002;
4 news staffs also win Stars
Yearbook staffs from Shawe Memorial, Mount Vernon and Munster (far left) found out this week they are among the state's best yearbooks. Six "Merit Award" winners also are posted . Check out the yearbook coverage by clicking here.

Four newspaper Hoosier Stars including The Clarion (left) joined six Merit schools in the news division of the Hoosier Star competition. See the judge's comments about these outstanding publications by clicking here.
