For more than a year,
a "task team" lead by Diana Hadley, Mooresville High School,
has worked with Indiana's Department of Education to create a set
of "academic" standards that meet the needs of scholastic
journalism.
While the standards below are not
official, they do represent the "best effort to date"
for standards that may guide future journalism and publication classes
in the near future, according to Hadley.
"We based our standards on the
extising Language Arts standards because it gives us the proper
language and format to follow. Still, what we have created is unique
to journalism's needs. We can only hope the new standards will be
adopted soon by the DOE," Hadley said. The Advocacy Task Team
hopes that DOE will act on the journalism standards before next
fall semester.
"We've worked closely with DOE
officials and we've rewritten these standards to fit in with what
the state has been telling us needs to be done," Hadley said.
The Advocacy Task Team also includes
Terry Nelson, Muncie Central; Jim Lang, Floyd Central and Denise
Roberts, Greenwood.
