Tom French To Keynote 2009 Fall Convention
Perhaps best known in the scholastic journalism community for his book titled "South of Heaven," Tom French, a Pulitzer prize-winning reporter and author, will keynote IHSPA's fall conference. French, who began his journalism career at Pike High School, currently teaches writing courses at Indiana University, his alma mater.
Deavers' Blog: 'Most Exciting Days In A Long Time'
It didn't take Melissa Deavers long to find out that her IHSPA sponsored intenship with the Munster Times was something special. Beginning her work as a reporter June 22, Melissa found herself covering a breaking news story days later about the discovery of the body of a missing local girl. Melissa, an adviser at Portage High School, is covering her internship experience in a special blog. Her recent post explains her rush of excitement and profound sorrow at covering such a story:
"I'm feeling such a mix of emotions right now. Part of me is so excited because I'm able to cover this hard, breaking news. However, part of me is heartbroken for Jada's family and friends. Doing this story has definitely made my skin a little thicker. I truly feel for the reporters and photographers who have to keep an unbiased attitude during situations like this that are so difficult. As I sit here writing this, I find myself tearing up a little for the first time today."

Hoosier Star Finalists Named For Newspaper, Yearbook
nCheck the list to see if your school is among those who have received an "excellent" or "superior" ratings from IHSPA's panel of national judges. The 2009 Hoosier Stars in three enrollment classes will be determined from these finalists.

Cub Reporter's Rees mmmm Files Story From D.C. In a first for Lawrence Central High School's journalism program, Managing Editor Eric Rees filed his election story for the Cub Reporter from Washington D.C. in time for the Jan. 23 issue. Elizabeth Granger, adviser, called Eric's story the "first to have a real dateline." Granger pointed out that the photo of Obama on Page 1 (left) was from coverage during Obama's visit to Indiana. Wire photos purchased through ASNE complete the coverage. |

Gunterman Wins Dow Jones 'Distinguished Adviser' Award Ryan Gunterman, adviser at Bloomington High School North, was awarded Dow Jones coveted "Distinguished Adviser" award at NSPA/JEA's national convention in St. Louis. Four advisers are chosen nationally by Dow Jones as Distinguished Advisers as part of the National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year Program. Gunterman has been an officer of the IHSPA since 2003 serving every capacity through president and assisting or chairing fall convention committees. Let The IHSPA Help With Your Election Coverage
High School newspapers across the Hoosier landscape continue to explore innovative ways to cover the upcoming state and national elections. The IHSPA encourages staffs to submit PDF files of their election pages (including editorial pages) to us. By featuring these pages on this Web site, we hope staffs will exchange ideas and even use politial photos that other schools have used in their coverage. Contact Diana Hadley for photos taken of Barack Obama and John McCain submitted to us by Muncie Central and Richmond High School photographers.
Teacher Interns Complete Successful Summer
Scecina adviser Chad Tuley became the first to complete a "broadcast" internship when he completed four weeks of work with Channel Six news. Chad joined Meredith Bledsoe, Hamilton Southeastern, who interned as a photographer for the Indianapolis Star and Lori Volheim, Elkhart Memorial, who joined the news staff at the South Bend Tribune. Hoosier Star Finalists Named for 2008
Twenty-six yearbooks and 26 newspapers from three enrollment divisions will battle it out for Hoosier Star honors. The final Hoosier Star Judge will name at least one Hoosier Star from each division along with first, second, third and honorable mentions possible. See the full list of yearbook finalists here. Journalism Kids Still Doing Better
According to a new 2008 study, students with journalism experience earn higher grade point averages, score better on ACT college entrance exams and demonstrate better writing and grammar slills in college compared with students without journalism education. See more from Jack's new study here.

Academic Standards For Journalism Approved
Academic standards for Journalism were approved by the Indiana State Board of Education on Oct. 3. Those standards, available at the link below, were written to inform the development of course content for the Journalism course in the curriculum. Though other standards await adoption, the Journalism standards can be used to guide the content for Mass Media and Student Publications. Download the new standards here.
